ON-DEMAND - Problem gambling in the Latinx communities - Some cultural considerations

Problem gambling is a real issue among the Latinx population.  However, the topic is rarely discussed, and the general attitude among Latinx people is to see gambling just as a form of entertainment.  In places like Illinois, the prevalence rate of problem gambling among Latinx individuals is 7.3%, well above the 2.9% among Caucasians.  Understanding culture as a complex, fluid concept which shapes our worldview and impacts our behaviors, this presentation explores how some traditionally understood Latinx cultural values may help to explain why Latinx individuals are so heavily impacted by problem gambling.  Also, this presentation will explore ways to use the Latinx cultural values to raise awareness about problem gambling and promote gambling treatment.  Specific examples drawn from real-life experiences will be shared and assessed. Participants are encouraged to bring questions based on their own practice experiences.
