Jody Bechtold, LCSW, ICGC-II, BACC, IGDC, CGT is a highly regarded gambling addiction expert working extensively across the globe with individuals, organizations, and associations. She is the CEO of The Better Institute, a group practice located in Pittsburgh. She is the co-author of The Gambling Disorder Treatment Handbook: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals (2021) and 2 chapters in the Social Workers Desk Reference v 4 on Gambling and Gaming Disorders, published in 2022. She serves as an Advisor to several startup and non-profits organizations including GamFin, Birches Health, and Seagulls Flock in the Philippines. She also serves as an Emeritus board member for the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board (IGCCB). Elizabeth Mulvaney
Elizabeth A. Mulvaney, MSW, LCSW, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, where she chairs the Direct Practice Specialization and co-chairs the Gerontology Certificate. A licensed clinical social worker with over a decade of direct practice experience serving older adults, she has focused on older-adult problem gambling prevention and outreach for more than fifteen years, supported by several state-funded outreach grants and a university pilot study on responsible gambling training for professional staff. She has co-authored peer-reviewed research on training providers to address gambling-related problems and has presented at national and regional conferences on recognizing and preventing gambling harm among older adults. She has also delivered numerous invited trainings on this topic for area agencies on aging, behavioral health organizations, and community groups, and her work was recognized with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania's "Person of the Year — Research and Academics" award in 2014. She is a member of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania and the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Why are more young people engaging in gambling and what’s influencing their choices? This session explores the deeper “why” behind youth gambling, including brain development, risk-taking, and the powerful impact of targeted marketing and sports betting culture. Attendees will learn how to recognize early signs of concern, understand what puts youth at risk, and practice approachable, non-judgmental ways to start meaningful conversations that support informed and healthier choices.
Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to describe current trends in youth gambling (including skins gambling, loot boxes, and sports wagering) and identify key risk factors that contribute to the development of problem gambling behaviors.
2. Participants will be able to explain how adolescent brain development influences risk-taking, decision-making, and susceptibility to gambling-related harm, and recognize early behavioral and emotional indicators of gambling problems.
3. Participants will learn and practice effective, research-supported communication and intervention strategies to help young people make informed choices and reduce gambling-related risks.

Brittany Sue Hines, M.Ed., is an educator and speaker with more than 10 years of experience specializing in youth gambling prevention, sexual health education, and adolescent wellness. She holds a BFA from the University of Hartford and a Master’s in Education in Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri. Brittany is a member of the National Council on Problem Gambling’s Research Professional Resource Network and has presented on youth gambling prevention at national and regional conferences. Her expertise was also recently featured in Child Mind Institute’s article “Teens and Online Gambling”.
In her work with Major League Soccer academy programs and as Lead Community Educator with Chicago-based Response for Teens, Brittany facilitates conversations with young people around gambling literacy, addiction prevention, healthy relationships, digital citizenship, sexual health, and more. Beginning this summer, Brittany will transition into a new role at the University of Missouri focused on gambling prevention and student wellness initiatives. No matter where she is, Brittany’s mission is to bring joyful empowerment to young people and their trusted adults as a means of cultivating a more inclusive, resilient, and healthier future.

Victor Ortiz is a social worker with over twenty five years of experience in the development of programs and services in the area of addiction, youth development, child welfare, and behavioral health. He has worked extensively with a wide range of populations, especially in addressing health disparities, promoting equity and social justice. Victor has served in various professional positions aimed at improving access, and advocacy of care for individuals and families.
In 2009, Victor received his BSW from Anna Maria College; He was recognized for academic excellence while serving as a mentor to many students seeking professional guidance. Victor received national scholarship recognition from the National Association of Social Workers and The Council on Social Work Education for his many years of advocacy in the Latinx community. In 2010, Victor received his MSW from Simmons College School of Social Work. Victor’s professional and personal experiences have contributed to many op-eds and publications, and was a contributor in the book: Responsible Gambling: Primary Stakeholders Perspective.
Victor is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and educator in the areas of addiction, gambling disorders, and health disparities and equity. Victor is currently the Director of the Office of Problem Gambling Services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

This 30-hour training series will highlight all the beginning needs for counselors and other health professionals for treating patients struggling with problem gambling issues.
This 30-hour training series will highlight all the beginning needs for counselors and other health professionals for treating patients struggling with problem gambling issues. This basic training addresses 100% of the required material for problem gambling certification. After taking this training, participants will have an in-depth understanding of problem gambling patients and the best methods of treatment.
This training will include individual work as well as live sessions. Live sessions will occur on October 8, 9, 16, 23, 29, 30, and November 5th from 9-12 CST. Completion and attendance is required for all components to earn the certification (if attending the ICPG Southern Illinois Conference, a recored session will be available). It is recommended to also hold time on your calendar on the following dates to ensure you have time to complete the self paced portion: October 1, 2, 14, 15, 21, 22, and November 6th from 9-12 CST. This will allow adequate time to complete the course.

Alyssa N. Wilson, PhD., BCBA-D, LBA is an Associate Professor of Psychology at California State University, Fresno. She received her Ph.D in Rehabilitation with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis and Therapy from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral (BCBA-D) and is a Licensed Behavior Analyst in the state of Missouri and Nevada. She is the co-author of The Gambling Disorder Treatment Handbook: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and chapter in the Social Work Desk Reference v 4 on Gambling Disorders. She is also the co-author of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Gambling Disorders, a guide for clinicians. Matt Missar, LSW, ICGC-I, IGDC, is a licensed social worker with The Better Institute and a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work. Matt holds a Master of Social Work degree with a focus in Direct Practice and certificate in Mental Health. Matt has certification as an Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor Level I (ICGC-I) and has also obtained his International Gaming Disorder Certificate (IGDC). Christina Cook, IGRS, is the founder of The Broke Girl Society, a peer-led community and podcast that creates safe, empowering spaces for women impacted by gambling harm. An international speaker and dedicated recovery advocate, she draws on her lived experience with disordered gambling to support others through the emotional, financial, and social realities of rebuilding a life in recovery. Christina also serves as the Business Manager for Evive, supporting individuals and families impacted by gambling harm, and as Executive Secretary of the International Problem Gambling and Gaming Certification Board.

Brian Hatch was spending his nights performing standup comedy. Sadly gambling addiction took over his life. He does not miss the money his addiction wasted away, but what gambling addiction made him regret was his time and effort lost to follow his passion. After a 14-year battle, in and out of Gambler's Anonymous and therapy, Brian started ALL IN The Addicted Gambler's Podcast in January 2015 as his recovery tool. He discovered that by TALKING about his addiction he can PREVENT ENGAGING in his addiction. Brian currently works for the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling as the Community Engagement Manager spending his days talking to middle schools, high schools, colleges, and his two favorites- running gambling recovery groups in prisons, and hosting a peer-led gambling retreat in Connecticut. #talkinghelps
Jeff Wasserman
Jeff Wasserman is a former litigation attorney whose successful 32-year legal career ended in
2015 when a trust account audit revealed his long-hidden gambling addiction. That life-altering
event marked the beginning of a deeply personal journey of recovery and purpose.
Today, Jeff serves as the Judicial Outreach and Development Director for the Delaware Council
on Gambling Problems, where he leads education and advocacy efforts aimed at raising
awareness of gambling addiction within the legal community. He is a Certified Peer Recovery
Specialist and the immediate past Vice President of the National Council on Problem Gambling,
where he continues to serve on the Board of Directors.
Jeff is the founder and facilitator of an international online Problem Gambling Support Group
and has spoken nationally for organizations including the American Bar Association, National
Association of Drug Court Professionals, and numerous state bar associations. His insights have

Hosted by the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling (ICPG), Cicero Family Service, and Loyola University, this annual conference brings together educators, mental health professionals, youth-serving professionals, counselors, prevention specialists, and community leaders to explore the evolving impact of gambling on Latine youth, families, and communities. Centered on youth prevention, the conference features timely research, engaging speakers, and culturally responsive strategies that empower communities to prevent gambling-related harm before it begins.
Sessions will explore youth prevention and early intervention strategies, the growing influence of technology, gaming, and social media, cultural and family influences, lived experience perspectives, and evidence-based approaches to education, policy, and treatment. Attendees will also hear from policymakers and community leaders while participating in interactive learning experiences, including live performances that celebrate culture and promote awareness.

Dr. Florence M. Chee is an Associate Professor of Digital Communication and Affiliate Faculty in Computer Science at Loyola University Chicago, specializing in the social, cultural, and ethical impacts of emerging technologies. As a technocultural ethicist, her research provides critical insights into digital consumption behaviors, online ecosystems, and the structural design of interactive media.
At LUC, Dr. Chee is the founding director of the Social & Interactive Media Lab (SIMLab) and Director of the Center for Digital Ethics & Policy (CDEP). Her work deeply examines the intersection of technology design and user vulnerability. Her book, Digital Game Culture in Korea: The Social at Play, is an ethnographic study that reframes online game "addiction" by analyzing the vital social networks and media ecologies of gaming spaces. Her ongoing research addresses safety, consent, and predatory monetization models in digital environments, advocating for stronger user data control and the protection of vulnerable populations from exploitative system designs.
Alexia de Leon
Ph.D. Assistant Professor Co-Program Director & Co-Clinical Coordinator- Professional Mental Health Counseling-Addiction Specialization Program
Alexia de León, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Co-program Director at Lewis & Clark College for the Professional Mental Health--Addictions Specialization program. She was the founding director of Lewis & Clark’s Latino Problem Gambling Services program that launched in 2017 and served over 75 clients in its first year of operation. She has been involved in providing treatment for those impacted by addiction and recovery for many years. Her research interests include the intersection of communities of color and addictions counseling, more specifically, Latinx families impacted by addiction and recovery, and the experiences of Latina clinical supervisors. Her current clinical work includes working with those impacted by addiction and gambling related issues within Latinx and recovery communities. Dr. de León maintains a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for Latinx communities seeking mental health services. She believes in healing the soul wound of her ancestors for the next generation by practicing cultural humility and trauma-informed counseling, along with other non-Western healing modalities for indigenous communities. Her clinical work and passion for Latinx wellness aims to transform and heal the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wounds of her ancestors by reconnecting with indigenous healing practices toward a road of recovery, collective empowerment and liberation.
Ninoshka Lopez Davila
Ninoshka Lopez is a community engagement and outreach professional dedicated to building meaningful partnerships that connect individuals and families with essential resources. With experience leading outreach initiatives across Lake County, she specializes in community engagement, relationship building, project coordination, and developing collaborative partnerships with schools, nonprofits, healthcare organizations, businesses, and local leaders.
In her role at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, Ninoshka coordinates outreach efforts that increase awareness of prevention and behavioral health resources, manages community partnerships, represents the organization at events and conferences, and helps develop initiatives that improve access to services for diverse communities. She is passionate about creating authentic connections, fostering collaboration, and ensuring community voices are reflected in the programs and services designed to support them.
As a bilingual professional from Puerto Rico, Ninoshka is committed to expanding access and strengthening relationships with underserved communities through strategic outreach, culturally responsive engagement, and collaborative problem-solving. Nina Naus, LSW, CADC (she/they), holds a Master’s in Social Work from Aurora University and brings over two decades of dedicated care to Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. Grounded in more than 17 years of experience as a probation officer and over 3 years in direct clinical social work, Nina specializes in community outreach, prevention, and treatment for substance use, mental health, and disordered gambling. They are passionate about supporting youth and individuals navigating co-occurring recovery, drawing on a trauma-informed approach that integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness to foster compassionate, inclusive healing.
Patti Vasquez
Patti Vasquez is a Chicago-based radio host, stand-up comedian, writer, and advocate with more than 30 years on stage and on air. She hosts Driving It Home with Patti Vasquez on WCPT 820 AM, syndicated to Minneapolis and Seattle, and has been honored with both a Silver Dome Award and a Peter Lisagor Award for her work in radio. A veteran of Chicago's comedy scene, Patti has performed nationally, internationally, and sold a sitcom pilot to ABC Studios. She speaks with equal fluency in humor and hard truth — and on the topic of problem gambling, she speaks from the inside. Patti grew up as the daughter of a gambling addict, and the experience shaped who she is as a communicator, an advocate, and a person. She brings that lived experience to every room she enters.
Maria Vidal de Haymes, LSW, PhD

Dr. Vidal de Haymes received her Masters Degree from the University of Chicago in 1987 and her Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1991. She joined the faculty of the Loyola University Chicago in 1992 where she is a Professor in the School of Social Work and directs the Migration Studies Sub-specialization and coordinates a migration-focused international social service exchange with the Universidad Iberoamericana-Mexico City and Puebla and Jesuit refugee and migrant serving projects. Dr. Vidal teaches courses in the areas of social welfare policy and migration studies. She has been the PI on a number of federal and international grants and authored publications concerning migration, poverty and inequality, child welfare, and social work education. Dr. Vidal’s service includes co-editorship of the Journal of Poverty and service on the board of Cicero Family Services, Taller de Jose, and the National Pastoral Migratoria. She is the 2016 recipient of the Partners in Advancing Education for International Social Work (PIE) Award of the Commission on Global Social Work Education of the Council on Social Work Education, the Loyola University Chicago Faculty Member of the Year award and Distinguished Research Faculty recognition in 2017 and 2022 respectively.

With a passion for improving patient care and healthcare systems, Dave holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Arizona State University, a Master of Science in Sports Medicine from West Virginia University, and an MBA from Western Governors University. Additionally, Dave is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), demonstrating a commitment to leadership excellence within the healthcare field.

Shannon Dunn is a Clinical Social Worker, educator, and author with over four decades of experience in behavioral health. Since 1980, she has provided care for individuals and families impacted by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and severe addictions. Her clinical background spans every level of the mental health care system—from state hospitals and inpatient units to outpatient and private practice settings. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. and MSW in Clinical Social Work from Loyola University Chicago and a BS from the University of Evansville.

There is an identified and well-documented relationship between gambling and suicide. Individuals who suffer from gambling disorders are at significantly higher risk for suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths. This can be attributed to the severe emotional, financial, and social consequences that can accompany problematic gambling. When combined with intense feelings of shame and hopelessness that may result from mounting debts, relationship breakdowns, and job losses, the risk of suicide becomes more acute.This presentation will focus on problematic gambling prevention and recovery, highlighting research, data-informed strategies, and promising practices that strengthen community response. This event will bring together community leaders, service providers, and advocates to explore how clear, consistent language and coordinated efforts can reduce stigma and increase awareness related to gambling harms.

Participants will learn how online gambling opportunities, persuasive design features, and chance-based elements in video games can influence habit formation and impact youth neurobiology.

Youth gambling behaviors are on the rise as gambling products and services have become easily accessible 24/7 on digital platforms. Other concerns for youth on digital platforms include persuasive design methods that encourage habit formation and the “gamblification” of some video games that encourage users to spend money and engage in chance-based activities. This presentation will introduce attendees to the complexity of youth gambling behaviors on digital platforms and how education on how digital platforms can impact a young person’s neurobiology is an important facet in preventing youth from forming unhealthy habits in gambling that can lead to problematic gambling behaviors and gambling disorder.

- Consider at least two ways that gamblification has been infused into video games.
- Understand definitions and concepts of five persuasive design strategies.

Alison Wood is the NC Problem Gambling Program Youth Prevention Coordinator with TELUS Health. She manages prevention grant programs, trains, and provides technical support on adolescent problematic behaviors in gambling, gaming, and digital media use. She has partnered with researchers to develop curriculum in emotional regulation skills and digital media literacy in gaming and gambling. In addition, she spearheaded an initiative to provide asynchronous modules on the prevention and treatment of gambling, gaming, and digital media modules utilizing cutting edge technology. She is a passionate advocate for youth prevention education and mental health promotion and believes expanded efforts in prevention research is vital.

This training provides counselors, therapists, social workers, peer support specialists, and other behavioral health professionals with an overview of Illinois’ Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program (VSEP) and its role within a comprehensive treatment and recovery plan. Participants will learn how the program works, eligibility requirements, enrollment processes, benefits and limitations, and practical strategies for discussing self-exclusion with clients. The training will also explore ways to integrate self-exclusion into individualized recovery planning to reduce access to gambling opportunities and support long-term recovery goals.

Anita Pindiur- Executive Director of the Way Back Inn has been with the Way Back Inn since 2002. Anita is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and holds certifications in substance use disorders, gambling disorders, domestic violence and anger management. Anita attended Loyola University for her undergraduate degree and Benedictine University for her Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology. Anita sits on the board of the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling, the Illinois Alliance on Problem Gambling, the Addiction Recovery Team in Oak Park, and the Oak Park Opioid Task Force.

Elizabeth Thielen is a Senior Director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services in Lake County, Illinois with over 20 years in the addictions field. A Licensed Professional Counselor and Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor, Elizabeth is passionate about increasing awareness of gambling disorder in the community and among helping professionals. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling, and has also been an adjunct faculty at the College of Lake County, teaching about Process/Behavioral Addictions. Elizabeth co-chairs the Gambling Disorder Committee, a sub-committee of the Illinois Substance Use Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations to the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery. Having spoken at the local, State, and National levels, Elizabeth is recognized as an engaging speaker on the subject of gambling disorder and prevention. A former amateur athlete, Elizabeth is also committed to helping athletes avoid disordered gambling as our state adjusts to recently legalized sports betting.
